Evidence-based practice in nursing health care

The guideline that I have chosen to evaluate relates to guidelines of practice for palliative care programs. The goal stated in these guidelines is "to improve access to quality palliative care for all people with serious illness regardless of setting, diagnosis, prognosis, or age" (National Coalition for Hospice and Palliative Care, 2018). These guidelines were created so that palliative care programs in the United states have an evidence-based framework to provide quality care to patients with terminal illnesses. To evaluate the quality of this guideline, I used the Agree II instrument (Grinspun, Melnyk, Fineout-Overholt, 2019). Scope and Purpose- The objective and population of this guideline is clearly defined as a set of guidelines that will provide the best practice when providing care to palliative care patients. Stakeholder Involvement- The guideline provides a list of individuals and healthcare organizations that were involved in contributing to the guideline. Views and preferences of patients benefiting from the guidelines were included. The preface of the guideline includes a section that discusses the audience of this guideline, clearly naming each specialty that this guideline is written for. Rigor of Development- The guideline includes a lengthy list of references used to create each domain. The foreword states that a systematic review was conducted for each aspect of the guideline. This review also identified the strengths and the gaps of each domain. A link is provided to be able to publicly view the review protocol and the journal article summarizing the review. Current updates of the changes to each guideline are stated. Clarity and Presentation- The guideline presentation is organized into sections discussing different domains and are clearly presented. The recommendations are very specific and provide practice examples for different scenarios. Applicability- The guideline is very much applicable to real-life scenarios and the examples provided show how potential resource implications can affect the practice. Editorial Independence- The guideline includes a section stating that the members of the group involved in writing the guideline completed disclosure forms, stating that the member does not have any financial benefit, relationships or special interests that would influence the member's contribution to the guideline The Clinical Practice Guideline for Quality Palliative Care has fulfilled all the appraisal points in the AGREE II instrument and is a high-quality guideline used to develop best practices in a palliative care program.
