Problem Statement While the literature indicates the importance of culturally competent nursing care, it is not known if culturally competent mental health nurses make a difference when providing care to people of color. As culturally diverse communities continue to grow, and greater importance is placed on early interventions in the prevention of mental health crisis. That impetus falls short with providing culturally competent mental health nursing care. Historically, psychiatrist and clinicians are required to demonstrate competence in providing culturally competent and culturally sensitive mental health assessment and services to patients, nurses are not (McGregor et al., 2019). Having behavioral health nurses who are culturally competent and culturally sensitive may improve client outcomes in the inpatient setting. This is particularly important when providing care to underserved populations and providing culturally competent mental health nursing care for people of color. Problem: It is not known if implementing a culturally competent mental health assessment tool would reduce readmission rates within a 30-day period or less when compared to not implementing a culturally competent mental health assessment tool for behavioral health patients of color.
Purpose Statement The purpose of this quantitative correlational practice improvement project is to evaluate the degree a relationship exists between nurses who have completed a cultural competence assessment to the length of stay of patients on an inpatient behavioral health unit at. The cultural competence assessment tool is defined as a 40-item questionnaire with four sections (1) awareness, (2) knowledge (3) sensitivity and, (4) competent practice, comprised of 10 questions each (Shen, 2015). Administered at the beginning of the shift and a revised questionnaire comprised of 10 questions that will assess the nurses’ feelings of cultural competency.
