Discussion: Purpose of the Study The purpose of the study—what the researchers wanted to explore or test—provides necessary context for the rest of the study’s information. Thus, it is a good place to start when crafting a research article summary. It can be tempting to directly quote the study’s purpose, but as a graduate-level writer, you are expected to use your own words to report on the literature from your field. For this Discussion, you identify the purpose of a sample research study and use paraphrasing strategies to convey that purpose in your own words. To prepare for this Discussion: Review the materials on reading a research article and on paraphrasing. Access the research article found in the Learning Resources. By Day 4 Post your initial 1- to 2-paragraph response that addresses the following: What was the purpose of the study the authors conducted? Write that purpose in your own words. Additionally, reflect on the process of paraphrasing the purpose. Pose any questions and/or explain challenges that came up during the process.
Now that you understand the qualities of a successful scholarly article summary, you can practice writing your own. This week begins a 4-week process of developing a 1-paragraph article summary on the Discussion board. We have broken the process down into individual steps to make it more manageable, and so that you can reflect and apply feedback as you go. Understanding and using information from a scholarly source is fundamental to graduate-level writing. One way to convey that understanding and to integrate source information into a paper that you are writing is through paraphrasing. Paraphrasing, which means transforming information into your own words and sentence structure, is both more effective and more sophisticated than relying on direct quotes. This week, you apply reading strategies by identifying and paraphrasing the purpose of a research study. You also continue developing your writing through a workshop submission and recording of feedback received. Learning Objectives Students will: Paraphrase the purpose of a research study Reflect on the paraphrasing process Draft original writing Report on writing feedback.
