POST 1 (Elizabeth)
"In healthcare confidentiality refers to the obligation of profressionals who have access to patient records or communication to hold that information in confidence, which is supported by the professional code of ethics and recognized by law", (Prater, 2014, para. 3). Patient's expect that when they disclose information to their provider it will be kept confidential and private. The health insurance portability and accountability act (HIPAA), was put into place in 1996 to allow for patient medical records to be disclosed when appropriate to other providers, but to be done in a safe way that would maintain the patient's privacy and confidentiality. As nurse's we are bound by the laws and regulations of HIPAA, and it is also importantly ethically for us to respect our patient's information and keep it private and confidential. Failure to comply with HIPAA can result in one losing their job.
I have not had any experiences where patient information was inappropriately disclosed. However, there is the potential if someone does not log off at work and a patient or family member looks at the computer. It is important that only the nurse and health care providers have the capability to access patient's information (Healthcare informatics: lesson 9, 2019). Confidentiality can also be breached through social networking, viruses on the computer system, and portable devices. With the use of technology using firewalls is critical to maintain HIPAA compliance as they act as the first line of defense to protect patient information, (O'Dowd, 2016).
One thing I have observed where I work is a provider and nurse or other health care worker discussing a patient, but in a place that is out in the open where other people can overhear whether purposefully or not. It would be better for patient privacy for healthcare professionals to discuss in a private area (which there is one at the main nurse's station). It would not take much time at all to relocate to discuss information while maintaining patient privacy. This small step would further protect patient information. With due diligence by all healthcare providers privacy and confidentiality can be maintained.

Confidentiality is the protection of sensitive information, allowing only the authorized people to have to access to seeing. In other words, from the health care perspective, keeping patient information private and protected. In my clinical experience, there are numerous ways patient information is kept confidential. In today’s world of health care, this is especially important. Virtually all patient information is kept in a data base online. Concerning HIPAA, "provide patients with access to their medical records and more control over how their personal health information is used and disclosed. They represent a uniform, federal floor of privacy protections for consumers across the country. State laws providing additional protections to consumers are not affected by this new rule." (Medical, 2015, para. 1).
Measures we use to protect patient information include two step identification logins. This system makes it so the user has to enter a password as well as a fingerprint to prove identity. Also, a large number of websites are blocked from use at work to protect from spam and hackers. I have not personally been involved in any incident that led to the improper disclosure of patient information. However, an opportunity for improper disclosure presents itself when our hospital sends patient information electronically to other hospitals. If our hospital has a patient with a special need, they may be sent to a specialized care hospital. In this instance we will forward all patient information to that hospital. It is possible that this information could end up in the wrong hands. In my personal clinical experience, I cannot think of any further measures that would protect patient information.
