Since 1999, AHRQ has led the Nation in responding to issues of patient safety problems in our healthcare system and improving the overall safety of healthcare (AHRQ, 2016). With a focus on making healthcare safer and better for tomorrow, the AHRQ has begun work to address the following goals: reducing antibiotic use and overuse, improving care for people with co-occurring illnesses, implementing knowledge-based data into electronic health records, and address opioid addiction in rural communities. Given their track record of success and efficiency in impacting change, the AHRQ greatly influences healthcare and improves patient outcomes. The Joint Commission is an organization focused on quality improvement and patient safety in healthcare. “The Mission of the Joint Commission is to continuously improve healthcare for the public… by evaluating health care organizations and inspiring them to excel in providing safe and effective care of the highest quality… across all settings” (The Joint Commission, 2020). The Joint Commission provides accreditation to healthcare organizations in various different settings and has come to set the standards for providing quality achievement in patient care and safety. As an independent not-for-profit organization, they are able to provide an assessment based upon evidence-based determinations of best practice. The Joint Commission has a tremendous impact on healthcare, not only based upon their accreditation process but also in collaboration with third-party payors that may require certification in value-based performance initiatives or Centers of Excellence (The Joint Commission, 2020).
