Nurse Advocacy: Adopting health in all policies approach

Responses to classmates must consist of at least 350 words (not including the greeting and the references), do NOT repeat the same thing your classmate is saying, try to add something of value like a resource, educational information to give to patients, possible bad outcomes associated with the medicines discussed in the case, try to include a sample case you've seen at work and discuss how you feel about how that case was handled. Try to use supportive information such as current Tx guidelines, current research related to the treatment, anything that will enhance learning in the online classroom. The nurse as an advocate for the patient and the community helps to shape health care policy. Population health affects nurses in every walk of their professional lives, as well as their personal lives. When nurses advocate on the smaller scale, it may be just a simple care issue that they can perform themselves, it may be a request from a physician, but it may be a bigger issue that can change the health care system. Some of the policies will change the social determinants of health for the disadvantaged, which can improve their options (Williams, Phillips, & Koyama, 2018). We are all familiar with our founder and advocate, Florence Nightingale, I offer the class, Miss Sophia Palmer. Sophia French Palmer (1853-1920) was a nurse that advocated for nurses. Her advocacy was the reason nurses registered with their states as such. In addition, she was the first editor of The American Journal of Nursing (ANA, 2020). This publication was the first organized place that nurses could dialog among themselves. It offered important topics, problems, and concerns, for the nurses that read it, contributed to it, and edited it for publication. She facilitated the organization of the ANA, which as we know, directs our nursing professional standards and guidelines. Palmer's role for the AJN offered the voice of nursing in a written format. Her beliefs and energy helped form the ANA as our professional voice. This nursing advocacy organization which as a group, forms professional and public policy. We as nurses must learn our other obvious roots and advocates that worked tirelessly in their beliefs to change the face of the nurse to gain the attention and respect that the profession deserves. Nurses give of themselves every day in many different ways. References: ANA. (2020). Sophia Palmer. Retrieved from https://www.ana.org. Williams, S. D., Phillips, J. M., & Koyama, K. (2020).
