Narrative Essay Now, having got his revenge by burying Fortunato alive, Montresor is faced with the inevitable realization of the truth by the community. He walks comfortably back to join other community members in the carnival celebrations, but does so very carefully not to arise any suspicions. Montresor then notices that Fortunato’s wife is sitted alone and in deep thoughts perhaps thinking about the whereabouts of her husband. In an attempt to divert her attention, Montresor joins her table and decides to share funny stories with her with the hope of keeping her busy. The plan works well for him as manages to grab her attention and time. She is no longer in deep deliberations or even showing any signs of missing her husband. Not, surprisingly, Montresor wears no disguise as he continues to sip on his drink while entertaining the wife of someone he just buried alive. As a matter of fact, he conceals his nervousness by moving from the table occasionally to dance and then get back again to see that Fortunato’s wife is not bored at all. Nevertheless, his hopes cannot be sustained for long because later as the party advances some people begun to question the whereabouts Fortunato because he was a vocal person and his absence was easily noticeable. Fortunato’s wife in particular begun to become nervous and demanded that Montresor tells him where her husband was because she last saw Fortunato with him and was therefore sure he knew exactly where to find him. With a cold voice full of exasperation, Montresor murmured, “I...I am sorry Lady Fortunato, I am not you husband’s keeper, you cannot just demand I produce him at will or know his whereabouts.” Surprised the obvious rudeness from Montresor, Lady Fortunato was now more than certain that something was not right. She now knew that her answers could only come from somewhere else. Aware that he had a made a mistake by being rude to her, Montresor carefully grabbed her palm and started to assure her that everything was going to be okay and that his husband would be found. “I am sorry having over reacted, I will help out in finding out the whereabouts of Fortunato, but as for now I can assure you that I am clueless as everyone in the room,” Montresor lied to her with a straight face. Lady Fortunato sat still, huddled, looking puzzled and trying to calm herself while hoping that everything Montresor said was nothing but the truth. Everyone else was also getting more concerned with the issue. A friend to the Fortunato’s decided to take the matters a step further by making a call to the nearby police station who promised to come to the scene immediately. Amidst the confusion on the issue, the authorities who were called earlier checked in and questions a number of guests present including Lady Fortunato. After lengthy deliberations with the selected individuals the authorities informed everyone that they were going to take Montresor with them for further questioning since everyone had alleged he was the last to be seen with him. Aware of the facts, and in an effort of fooling everyone on his involvement on the disappearance of Fortunato, Montresor quickly agreed to accompany the police and to assist them with any possible information that would help them to find him. In his mind, Montresor is certain that his willingness had certainly blinded his community members on his innocence, since they would believe that he was actually helping in getting a solution. Indeed, once at the station, Montresor did nothing but give weird stories and imaginations on Fortunato whereabouts. The police could not get any detail that would point on his involvement with his disappearance. They had no other option other to allow him to go back home and promised to do further investigation. Little did they know that the man they were all looking for was buried alive by the very same man giving them unworthy leads.
