Patient-Centered Environment Share an example of a situation in which a patient-centered environment was created by acknowledgment and consideration of a patient’s cultural diversity. Student Example Use as an example In nursing, we are continuously faced with diverse cultures, religions, and beliefs. Patient-centered care is when patients' and family's preferences, values, cultural beliefs, and socioeconomic factors are respected. In one situation, I cared for a Chinese American who spoke little English. —accompanied by his spouse and daughter. The patient was admitted for pancreatic cancer with metastasizing to other organs. Asian American and Pacific Islanders (AAPIs) are the only racial/ethnic group in which cancer is the leading cause of death, with higher cancer mortality rates (Weir, Tseng, Yen & Caballero, 2020). I obtain a health history for this patient via phone with a professional interpreter. For example, I used a patient-centered and culturally competent approach while conducting a cultural assessment. This allowed me to deliver culturally competent and patient-centered care that incorporated the patient/family values, beliefs, and practices into the treatment plan and also it enables me to connect with the patient/family as a unique, personalized, and omit bias of patients' cultural groups (Campinha-Bacote, 2020). According to Weir et al., (2020), Chinese- and Vietnamese-American patients with limited English proficiency prefer to discuss the use of non-Western medical practices with their providers, and this sometimes can cause a delay in care due to Asian's significant barriers. They also preferred using professional interpreters rather than family members and preferred gender-concordant translators (Ngo-Metzger et al., 2020). Furthermore, they expressed the need for help in navigating health care systems and obtaining support services (Ngo-Metzger et al., 2020). The hospital policy, where I work, requires the use of a trained professional interpreter via telephone. Cultural competency is knowledge and being conscious of what cultural differences exist and being able to develop a connection with those cultures, so they come to trust the healthcare provider (Buttaro, Trybulski, Polgar-Bailey, and Sandberg-Cook, 2017). Medically-underserved Chinese Americans face multiple challenges in accessing health care due to limited English proficiency (LEP), lack of cultural orientation in care, and lack of culturally and linguistically skilled care (Ivey et al., 2020). They also considered the quality of interpreter services to be critical. Joint Commission standards required the hospital have qualified professional interpreters for Limited-English Proficient (LEP) patients to deliver the safest, quality care in the healthcare setting (Newnum, 2020). Medical Interpreting by qualified medical interpreters is essential when the life and welfare of a patient are at stake (Ngo-Metzger et al., 2020)). Patient-centeredness and cultural competence aim to improve health care quality, but each highlights different viewpoints of quality. The primary purpose of the patient-centeredness has been to accommodate individualized care and return emphasis on individual relationships and strives to promote excellence for all patients. On the other hand, the primary aim of cultural competence has been to enhance health equity and lessen differences by focusing on ethnicity, race, and other dilemmas of a multicultural society.  I created a patient-centered setting by identifying the essentials needs of the patient/family, which promoted clear communication that was necessary to provide care to the patient/family.
