The involvement of patients in their treatment and healthcare decisions has been on the rise recently due to advancements in technology and ease of access to medical information by the general public (Thompson, A. G. 2007). In light of this, healthcare practitioners have increased the level of patient involvement to give the best available care to the satisfaction of the patients. Impact of Patient Involvement in Treatment Patient involvement can be split into three approaches; collaboration, consultation, and patient-led research. Participation of patients covers a broad range of areas and has great variations, including surveys, focus groups, and interviews. Involvement of patients in clinical decisions has been shown to improve care quality, increase accountability and transparency in the treatment process, increase the patient's trust in the treatment process due to freedom of choice, increase patient's quality of life, minimize patient anxiety, promote positive communication between patient and health professional, improved decision making due to advanced options and improved monitoring and evaluation services (Vahdat, S et al. 2014). In my experience, a patient I was offering medical advice on birth control options had a pretty good idea of the available methods and only needed guidance on the safest and most compatible method for her. She informed me that she knew available methods included barrier methods, sterilization methods, intrauterine devices, hormonal methods, and natural family planning. Patient decision aids refer to tools that assist individuals' involvement in decision-making by disclosing the decisions that need to be made, providing the options and possible outcomes, and clarifying personal values (Stacey, D. et al. 2008). These aids are designed to supplement the counseling and advice given by a health practitioner to make an informed decision.
