Journal Article Review/Critique Group Project HESC 500 Applied Statistics to Clinical Research A journal article review is an important assignment in this course. The guidelines and detailed instructions will be discussed in class. Articles should be from peer-reviewed or scholarly journals and relate to the field of study. To successfully accomplish the main objectives of this assignment, students will perform a critical, constructive analysis of recent published studies (journal articles) in the healthcare or public health fields through summary, classification, analysis and comparison. A review and critique of the methodological approach and discussion of the applications in the field are expected. Instructions: 1) Select a topic of interest related to your clinical field. a) Find an article where the t-test was used. Workshop 3 2) Search the library's online databases to find two scholarly or peer-reviewed articles related to the topic of interest. 3) Read critically the articles. Many journal articles can be quite complex and use complicated wording and statistics. You may need to read each article a few times before you get a full grasp of it. 4) Review and discuss the Methods section of each article follow the sub-sections below: a) Comment about the study design. b) Report the sample size, power and sampling methods used. c) Report the variables (indicators) explored/analyzed in the study. d) Identify all variables included in the study as: i) Independent/Predictor/Explanatory Variables. ii) Dependent/Outcome/Response Variables. e) Describe analytical techniques (statistical tests, test of significance/hypothesis) performed. f) Comment about the level of significance researchers selected. 5) Write a summary of each article. This should be one to two paragraphs. Include the purpose for the article and the most relevant findings. 6) Identify the main research questions of the study. 7) Discuss the main implications of the results of the study for nursing and how knowledge in the area could be expanded and applied. 8) Write a citation for each journal article at the top of the review using the American Psychological Association's (APA) format. 9) Insert, as a link, the website from where each article was retrieved. 10) Summarize your review/findings, following the instructions listed above, in a 15-20 minutes PowerPoint presentation to be presented/discussed in class. 11) Articles must be recent; less than 3 years old.
