Topic 3: Proposing the Solution

Please respond intelligently and concisely to the following post: When conducting research, there are seven levels of evidence that are graded in order of quality and validity, and applicability to common practice (Winona State University Website, 2019). Each level of evidence is important and can contribute to practice in a meaningful way. The seven levels are outlined below in order from highest (highest in quality, validity, and applicability) to lowest. 1.) Systematic Review or Meta-Analysis 2.) Critically Appraised Topics (Evidence Synthesis) 3.) Critically Appraised Individual Article (Article Synopses) 4.) Randomized Control Trial (RCT) 5.) Cohort Study 6.) Case-Controlled Studies (Case Series/Reports) 7.) Background Information/Expert Opinion (Mentzer, 2020). Systematic Review or Meta-Analysis is an evaluation and summary by researchers of all literature on a specific topic (Mentzer, 2020). This is the highest level of evidence, from which evidence-based practice is derived. Critically Appraised topics, or Evidence Synthesis may also be used to determine nursing practice. Evidence synthesis is performed from an assessment and synthesis of multiple research studies (Mentzer, 2020). These are summaries of the best available research on a given topic. Evidence based practices may also be constructed from data gleaned in evidence synthesis. Practitioners may use evidence from critically appraised individual articles in practices such as teaching patients various stress management strategies. While there are many effective methods to reduce stress, such strategies are not generalizable. Practitioners can encourage patients to try a variety of stress management strategies to see what works best for them. Randomized control studies, cohort studies and case-controlled studies are all vital in building a body of supporting evidence to guide evidence-based practices. Lastly, while background information/expert opinion may be the lowest level of evidence, nurses may use such information to individualize a plan of care for his/her patient. An example would be if the nurse incorporated specific cultural practices or rituals into the patient's plan of care. While the practice itself may have no scientific underpinnings, treating the patient with cultural sensitivity can improve the patient's emotional/psychological wellbeing. Regardless of the method the practitioner uses, it is important to continually review the latest evidence and incorporate it into practice as appropriate. While some types of evidence are more valid and generalizable across all populations, we cannot minimize the importance of evidence that can be invaluable to a narrower client base in providing patient-centered care.
