The primary objective of public/community health nursing is to maintain and improve populations’ overall health by promoting and assisting populations in making positive behavioral changes. Students in this course take an interdisciplinary approach to gaining an understanding of population-based care practice. They examine health concepts, levels of prevention, the epidemiology of wellness, global health issues, and disease control, as well as interdisciplinary care principles. Students gain knowledge and skills in planning, intervening, and evaluating care in communities. Additionally, they examine integrative approaches to working with community groups to positively influence health behaviors. Additionally, students complete a group project in which they conduct a literature review and synthesize information about a specific health problem and target population, followed by an investigation of an appropriate intervention program.
