Discussion Question: Define patient-centeredness in the context of evidence-based practice. Describe barriers to the implementation of patient-centered evidence-based care in your practice environment and share actions that might be taken to alleviate these barriers. The definition of patient-centeredness is located p176. What comes to mind, is my previous position as an inpatient BMT nurse at the VA hospital. Every morning the interdisciplinary team rounds and this includes; the fellow, MD, social worker, Pharm-D, and the NP. We discuss; concerns, labs, medications, or psychosocial concerns. This is patient-centered, and I recall patients and family being grateful for being included in the plan of care. Some of the Fellows are in the 3year of internship and need guidance with ordering the meds and learning protocols. several of the providers are new Fellows, they often do not know how to properly manage their time and or communicate with the patients. Patients often do not know their doctor's name or do not understand why their receiving treatment. A barrier I often encounter is dealing with new fellow is he/she does not understand that their patient is a human being. They often are so focused on trying to finish their rounds that they forget the patients are terrified. A possible action might include for the fellows to maybe shadow an RN for a day and take note of how often a patient might call for pain or nausea medications and maybe they would understand that the patient not only need chemotherapy but we must treat the patient as a whole. (Hopefully, this helps) or write this somewhere along the line towards oncology
