NURS 6531 Advanced Practice Care of Adults Across the Lifespan

Discussion response to R. As nurses, we are always challenged on how we can contribute to society as professionals. We are expected to take professional responsibilities for continuously providing direct care, protecting individual lives, and supporting activities of daily living. To achieve this, we as nurses need to improve our nursing competency and utilize it in our daily practice. In this sense, competency is an ability acquired through experience and learning (Buttaro et al., 2021). I expect that at the end of this course I will have acquired nursing competencies to help me in my career path. Summary of my Expectation The NRNP 6531 course is essential because through this course students learn how nurse practitioners master the art and science of clinical decisions among the population of adults. This course helps students to focus on the diagnosis and management of primary healthcare needs and problems of adults across the lifespan. I-Human case studies listed each week help the student to evaluate and manage the widely occurring medical concerns in the adult population. I am hoping that after completing this course I will increase my knowledge and practical skills on behavioral and physical disease processes primary to diagnosing illness as well as planning, implementing, and evaluating treatment programs encountered in a primary care setting (Buttaro et al., 2021). It is also my expectation that I will gain confidence in a clinical experience where I can learn to plan, implement, and evaluate therapeutic regimens for adult patients with common chronic and acute illnesses. Strengths and Challenges of Nursing Practice Competencies The course is going to equip me with nursing competencies that are essential in my area of practice. Hwang (2015) describes eight core nursing competencies that nursing students should acquire during their studying and working life. The first four competencies are assessment and intervention, communication, critical thinking, and human caring and relationship competencies. The skills needed to reinforce these competencies are monitoring, therapeutic procedures, oral reporting, writing, and computing skills (Fukada, 2018). Decision-making skills coupled with scientific and research processes lead to critical thinking. Knowledge and practice of ethics together with skills such as patient advocacy is the key to ensuring that nurses are competent in their relationships and human caring. These four competencies have several strengths. For instance, under communication and relationship building is relationship management and with some of the skills such as how to deliver bad news in such a way as to maintain credibility and follow through on promises and concerns and assert views in non-threatening, non-judgmental ways (Fukada, 2018). This element will help in dealing with the elderly population. These knowledge, skills, and attitudes focus on patient-centered care, teamwork and collaboration, evidence-based practice, quality improvement, safety, and informatics. Some of the challenges include the increasing workload of the nurses due to the increasing number of the aging population. When nurses are overworked, they experience burnout which may compromise their competencies. Career Objectives A family nurse practitioner has a strong devotion to the health of her patients and community. My career goal is to be committed to preventive measures for a healthy lifestyle and the knowledge to educate my patients to make healthier choices. I am passionate about patient-centered care as it permits the patient to take an active role in their healthcare decisions and plans. I liked to advocate for community collaboration for a healthier society and believe that it will provide a healthier society for the future generation. This course will help me to master my skills related to my career goals like performing a physical examination, diagnosis and managing the condition, ordering diagnostic tests, prescribing medications, and educating the patients to develop a healthy lifestyle. I would like to get to work with people of all ages, ethnicity, race, or culture and would assist in a wide range of medical issues.
