The role of nursing leadership in creating a mentoring culture in acute care environments

Very early in my career, I had a mentor that was also my manager. She took me under her wing to work with me in the development of my leadership skills. She had approached me and asked that I consider taking on the evening house supervisor role. I was honored as I had only been in practice for a couple of years at that time. Boykin et al. (2014) referred to mentoring as a lifelong process (p. 154). My manager continued to serve as my mentor well into my career by nurturing my professional development. She would encourage me to stretch beyond what I thought I was capable of by identifying situations that would support the building of my confidence. She would remain behind the scenes but observing, never intervening, and then after the situation was resolved, would sit down with me to process what went well and what I could have done differently. She never judged but did hold me accountable for my decisions, encouraging me to apply what I had learned as I moved forward in my leadership career. Three mentoring skills she used with me were: showing me that she was vulnerable (Boykin et al., 2014); she was a teacher, counselor, and coach (Hurst & Coplin-Baucum, 2003, as cited in Bally, 2007); and trusted guide (Saletnik, 2018). I appreciated that she never gave me the “answer” or “solved” the problem for me. She was excellent at reflective questioning, always leading me toward solving the challenge for myself. These are qualities that I look for and admire in the professionals that I work with. I often think of her as I face a new situation or challenge and try to emulate her as I mentor future leaders.
