In this approach, surveyors collect, store, and process data to identify performance concerns in a hospital to ensure constant provision of proper and safe care and treatment (Tuck & Hough, 2017). By that, a healthcare organization ensures reliability, safety, and standardized care delivery, treatment, and services. A healthcare organization can incorporate tracer methods using three approaches. First, a healthcare institution can practice trace methods through individual patients. In this approach, the surveyor selects a particular patient and assesses the way care has been delivered to the patient starting from the time of admission to discharge point (The Joint Commission, 2015). During this process, the surveyor interacts with the nursing staff and care providers to identify performance concerns. To enable the surveyors to come up with a more comprehensive evaluation of the hospital’s systems and practices, they can select patients in high-risk areas. Secondly, a health facility can implement tracer methods in one specific system or process, such as a medication process. In this approach, surveyors interact with staff members, nurse managers, and patients within a particular system, to collect data to evaluate the medication (The Joint Commission, 2015). The data gathered help the surveyors to identify the challenges which hinder the efficient running of the specific process within the organization and also identify the improvement opportunities. Lastly, a health institution can integrate tracer methods at specific points in a system (The Joint Commission, 2015). This approach helps in identifying risk points and safety issues experienced in particular treatment or care provision processes. This can be the issues experienced by specific patients’ populations, healthcare professionals, or at the healthcare administration level. Finally, tracer methods enhance quality care delivery and patient safety. Besides, tracer methodology can be enhanced through nursing staff training and automation of the auditing processes (Tuck & Hough, 2017).
