The limbic system is a part of the brain that steers emotions. The limbic system releases neurochemicals that connect people at an emotional level, when around other individuals. This forms social connections. These situations can either promote feelings of empathy from dopamine or promote fear, anxiety, and anger from norepinephrine. Limbic resonance is the idea that sharing deep emotional situations arise from the limbic system and is the capacity for non-verbal communication and empathy. An example is when a mother maintains deep eye contact with her baby. This forms a sense of safety, attunement, and peace, which is defined as limbic resonance. Research shows trauma is processed and stored in the limbic system (NAMI, 2019). When a person is suffering from or has suffered from trauma, a person's limbic resonance may be unbalanced and this leads to limbic dysregulation. Limbic revision can be formed by various forms of therapy, counseling, and healing. An example of a unique therapy option is equine therapy which has shown to be beneficial in trauma and stress disorders. According to Williams (2018), limbic restructuring or revision can be done thru equine-facilitated psychotherapy. This has shown effective healing with relational trauma and offers understanding of why horses offer powerful interventions with clients. Therefore, in order to heal from trauma, it is crucial that treatment targets limbic system healing. Research has also shown low cortisol levels and the limbic system can play a crucial role in mediating relationships from life traumas (Seo et al., 2019)
